Pan
PAN is the Greek God whose character assures him a special place in the European imagination. He is a forest spirit akin to our Green Man, with a love for music and dance. Part man, part goat, he provides a forerunner to the lusty spirituality of European folk traditions.
In his 'Paradise Lost' Milton wrote:
Universal Pan,
Knit with the Graces and the Hours in dance,
Led on the eternal spring.
In this glass Pan, his part-goat nature is seen in his right eye. As god of the forest, his nose and brow form the trunk and crown of a tree. His beard is not the traditional goatee associated with him, but that of Egyptian royalty, indicating the debt of all European spiritual traditions to the Ancients. Approx. 28 cm height
